The cover of this documentary poses the question: American dream or art world scheme? The question is asking whether Marla, the subject of the film, is a fraud or a prodigy. The film does not answer this question for us. At the beginning, the film gives us the impression that she is an amazing artist. About half way through it then twists, and shows us the other side of the argument. They show her painting one of her less polished paintings, and it does not seem like much. The family then puts out a DVD of her painting a picture from start to finish, to clear up any doubts. This documentary does not peek in to this DVD though, and we, as the viewers, are left in the dark as to the validity of her work.
I agree, Thomas, I think it's true that we are left in the dark, but the more interesting question, and indeed, the one at hand, is: WHY are we left in the dark?
